1 Step 1
Detangle your hair fully with a wide-tooth comb. Gather it at the back and split it into three equal sections: left, middle and right. Equal sections are the secret to an even braid. Hold the left and right sections in your hands and let the middle hang.
Pro tip: Slightly damp hair with a little detangler gives you grip. Squeaky-clean hair slips.

2 Step 2
Cross the right section over the middle section, so it becomes the new middle. Then cross the left section over the new middle. Keep tension even and hold the crossings close to your head, not loose at the ends.
Pro tip: Say it out loud: right over middle, left over middle. It sounds silly and it works.

3 Step 3
Continue alternating right over middle and left over middle, pulling each strand snug after every crossing. A relaxed grip makes a bumpy braid; a death grip makes a tight one that pulls on your scalp. Aim for firm and comfortable.
Pro tip: Stuck with tired arms? Rest your elbows on a table and bring the braid to you.

4 Step 4
When you reach about 5 cm from the ends, hold the braid firmly and wrap a hair tie around it two or three times. For a polished finish, loosen the sides of the braid slightly by tugging gently on the outer loops, giving a fuller look.
Pro tip: Keep a spare tie on your wrist. The ties that come with ponytails slip off a braid's tapered end more often than you think.
